Volcanic activity has shaped the Auvergne for 15 million years, and eruptions ceased very recently, only 7000 years ago. The ‘sucs’ that form the landscape near CosyCamp are cone-shaped mountains. Around 12 million years ago, faults opened and magma rose rapidly to the surface where it cooled quickly. This richness provided the materials for the built heritage we recognize today: dry stone walls, lauze roofs, or phonolite. While 80 volcanoes make up the chain of the Massif Central puy, there are more than 300 that constitute the landscape of Haute-Loire. Velay is one of the large French volcanic provinces. The western part mainly comprises Strombolian volcanism with 150 basaltic cones: The most famous of our volcanoes houses a lake: Lake Bouchet, ideal for taking fresh air in summer. In the heart of Velay, there is the Puy basin (sediments of the paleo-Loire and paleo-Borne, sand and grit)
Its eastern part includes the Emblavez trench and its sucs (phonolitic volcanoes); this is where CosyCamp is located at the heart of the volcanoes, and the high basaltic plateau of St Front, Fay sur Lignon, le Monastier…

While our campsite offers you a green setting and an ecological commitment, you also enjoy fantastic landscapes all around. We are 2h from the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park but we also have phonolitic volcanoes in Haute-Loire: The Sucs.
In the Natural Park near Clermont-Ferrand, five multi-millennium volcanic territories are on the agenda. Over about forty kilometers, the volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys may seem familiar… these are the ones we drew at school with a crater on top. There are over 80, but of course, the most well-known is the Puy de Dôme, 1465m high, which gave its name to the department. The Monts Dore contain volcanoes that are hundreds of millions of years old and are dotted with volcanic lakes.
This is where the Puy de Sancy (1885m), the highest volcano in France, can be seen. But in Haute-Loire directly close to CosyCamp, you can observe volcanoes like you’ve never seen before! Further south, the Monts du Cantal and their broad valleys amaze; with a ground diameter of 70 km, it’s the largest in Europe! On the volcanic plateau of Cézallier, Salers and Aubrac cows graze among meadows, groves, and steep peaks that are 100,000 years old. Finally, on the less steep granite plateau of Artense, rocks, forests, rivers, and crystal-clear lakes intertwine.

Even more amusing, we learn that the waters of Vichy come from rainwater absorbed by the Chaîne des Puys and that the Place Jaude in Clermont-Ferrand is built on a volcanic lake.
